Job Summary

The Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is seeking an engaged, energetic Orthopedic Surgeon to join the faculty within the Orthopedic Trauma Section.

This faculty position will provide clinical care at UW Health University Hospital (Level 1 Trauma Center) and Unity Point Health – Meriter Hospital (dedicated Geriatric Hip Fracture Program), with additional opportunity to participate in the care of pediatric trauma patients at UW Health American Family Children’s Hospital. Clinical care will include call coverage, dedicated OR time to facilitate timely, daytime care of urgent/emergent injuries, as well as outpatient clinic in partnership with Orthopedic Trauma Advanced Practice Providers.

Medical education is a core component of this position, including teaching and mentorship of residents within our robust Orthopedic Surgery Residency, as well as medical students and other learners.

Further academic opportunity is available through participation in the section’s established clinical research portfolio, as well as the opportunity to develop an individual research program, if desired.

Applicants who are interested in pursuing an academic career in Orthopedic Trauma Surgery will be considered for the titles of Assistant Professor (CHS), Associate Professor (CHS), Professor (CHS), Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, Clinical Professor. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications.

This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • For candidates choosing to pursue research, efforts could include independent research or collaboration with other established researchers including clinical trials, clinical outcomes research, etc.
  • Teach medical students, residents, and fellows. Additional teaching efforts could include participation or development of a unique or exceptional teaching program in a clinical or classroom setting.
  • Participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.
  • Clinical responsibilities include call coverage (1:6 on average), OR coverage and outpatient clinics at UW Health and/or affiliated locations.

The Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation is part of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and comprises 71 faculty members across eight orthopedic subspecialty divisions/sections: Arthroplasty, Musculoskeletal Oncology, Foot & Ankle, Hand & Upper Extremity, Orthopedic Spine Surgery, Orthopedic Trauma, Pediatric Orthopedics, and Sports Medicine, as well as the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The Orthopedic Trauma Section consists of six surgical faculty members, four outpatient Advanced Practice Providers, and a team of dedicated inpatient Orthopedics Advanced Practice Providers.

Compensation

Negotiable, 12 month

Required Qualifications

  • WI Medical license by the start date of the position.
  • Board-certified or board eligible through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery by the start date of the position.
  • Completion of a US Orthopedic Surgery residency and Orthopedic Trauma Association-Accredited Fellowship by the start date of the position
  • Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges, by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in caring for pediatric trauma patients
  • Experience providing clinical care in an academic medical center environment, and experience at a Level 1 Trauma Center within the last three years
  • Academic interest demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications and scholarly research activity highly desired.
  • For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on CT or CHS track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the CHS or CT track.
