Position Overview
The Music Theory and Musicology Area in the School of Music at The Ohio State University is searching for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in musicology and/or ethnomusicology. Areas and topics of specialization are open, but the successful candidate will have a scholarship and teaching profile that complements and expands existing faculty expertise in our Area, which includes faculty members in both musicology and music theory. We are especially interested in candidates whose work advances fine-grained analysis of music and sound within communities of practice.
The Music Theory and Musicology Area prides itself on constructive collaboration across the disciplines of musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory. The successful candidate should evidence interest in and engagement with music studies, broadly defined, in terms of scholarly output, curriculum development, public outreach, and student recruitment. Finally, the candidate will teach within and further develop musicology’s core undergraduate and graduate curricula. Undergraduate core courses include European art music traditions, African American musical traditions, musical citizenship (the intersection of music, politics, and civics globally), and global music histories. Graduate courses include disciplinary surveys (in “musicology” and “ethnomusicology”), methodological training (historical and ethnographic), and specialized seminars.

The successful candidate will evidence
- A scholarship and teaching profile that complements and expands existing faculty expertise in musicology and music theory at in the School of Music and related units at Ohio State.
- Scholarship that advances fine-grained analysis of music and sound within communities of practice.
- A scholarship, teaching, and service profile that demonstrates interest in and engagement with music studies, broadly writ (including musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory), in terms of scholarly output, curriculum development, public outreach, and student recruitment.
- A teaching profile that demonstrates the ability and desire to teach within and further develop the Musicology Area’s core undergraduate and graduate curricula in the School of Music.
Education and Experience Requirements
Required
- Ph.D. in Musicology, Ethnomusicology, or a comparable and relevant humanistic discipline.
- Earned doctorate by the time of appointment is required.
- ABD candidates with an expected graduation date prior to August 15, 2027, will be considered.
Desired
- Scholarship that complements and expands existing expertise in musicology and music theory.
- Demonstrated engagement with interdisciplinary music studies.
- Experience in curriculum development, public outreach, and student recruitment.
